Introduction

The Order of the Arrow is an organization dedicated to cheerful service and the promotion of camping. Through this Where to Go Camping Book, Manitous Lodge #88 continues to promote this ideal of making camping more readily available for those who love the out of doors, including Scouts, Venturers, and the everyday camper.

Please feel free to tell us about the experiences you have using this Where to Go Camping Book, We would like to have your input on it. You may contact us at the Great Sauk Trail Council, Ann Arbor, MI either by phone at (734) 971-7100 or visit the Manitous Lodge web site at http://Manitous88.tripod.com/ and sign our guest book. You may also e-mail us directly at Manitous88@tripod.net . If you know of any places that should be included in the book or corrections, please let us know. This year’s edition is not a enormous different but with hosting a conclave, we do get busy. But please feel free to use this book in the planning of your outdoor program, you just may end up having more fun than you thought.

On behalf of Manitous Lodge #88, we wish you a happy and safe journey in the great outdoors.

This 2001 edition of our Where to Go Camping Booklet is organized to provide Scouts and Scout leaders of the Great Sauk Trail Council and other nearby councils with ideas and information to aid in planning their outdoor program.

The book is organized into chapters based on the type of activity and location. Scout camps, high adventure opportunities, and other camping and outing possibilities in various nearby states and provinces are included.

The book's primary focus is on camping, canoeing and hiking opportunities in the Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Ontario Canada area. High adventure and other special opportunities cover a wider geographic area. Some activities (hikes, etc.) which are particularly appropriate as day trips are only discussed when they are within or are relatively close to the council territory. Rather than provide a comprehensive list of parks and campgrounds, considerable effort has been made to limit the lists to those locations that provide particular program opportunities for Scout troops. Typically, this means that relatively distant locations, which do not provide for group camping, are not included, unless there is a feature of particular interest.

We have made an effort to check phone numbers and the other information included throughout the book, but it is not uncommon for changes to occur, especially the area code. Please confirm details with any facilities well in advance of any activities to avoid disappointment.

Where available, we have also provided hyperlinks (http://www.....) to web sites and email addresses throughout the material, which can be used to locate additional related information on the Internet. Many councils now provide camp information, maps, and Scoutmaster’s camp guides over the Internet. New to this year we have added, frequently used forms and policies of our council in Appendix A, where applicable we have included a link in this document, to Appendix A. Appendix A is also listed as a bookmark in this document for ease of use.

Since we have not had the opportunity to visit every single location listed in this book personally (although we'll keep trying), we appreciate any feedback that you have regarding appropriateness of facilities for Scout troops. If we have left out any of your favorites, or if we have made mistakes in the information we included, please let us know.

.

Scouts Canada Camps

With Canada being just to the south of Detroit, the Scout units of southeastern Michigan are presented with a unique opportunity to participate in international scouting. We especially hope that co-ed Venture Crews might find this information useful. At this time, we are only providing a few examples and Internet addresses for additional information. Ontario alone has 72 scout camps listed at http://www.interlog.com/~speirs/camps/campindx.htm .

When visiting Canada, be prepared. Have proof of residency/citizenship and insurance for all members of your unit. Contact council for additional information. Groups not covered by Scouts Canada Insurance may be asked to supply an insurance liability certificate. You may also be required to sign the Scouts Canada "hold harmless" agreement prior to use. This form is available on the Internet at http://www.scoutscan.net/wildman/hhagree.htm.

Scouts Canada homepage can be found at http://www.scouts.ca/ .
