Munhacke Lodge
#88 was chartered to the Washtenaw-Livingston Council on
June 16, 1936. Munhacke is a Lenni Lenape word that
means "Badger". The council name was
changed to Portage Trails in 1949 and was based in Ann
Arbor, Michigan. The lodge was based at Camp
Newkirk, a small camp of about 40 acres located on the
banks of the Huron River near Dexter, Michigan.
The lodge was started by two individuals in the council,
both of whom were former members of the OA and had moved
into our council's area. One had joined the OA in
1921. Walter MacPeek was the council executive at
the time. Munhacke was the first OA lodge in our
council. In the 1930's, one scout per week at camp
was inducted into the Order. The lodge initiation in
the 1930's required that a scout demonstrate his skills by
navigating a canoe several miles down the river back to
camp, without paddles and at night. Today we would
consider this hazing, but those were different times.
Dan Ling was the Lodge Advisor in 1945 and later became a
member of the National OA Committee and Founders Advisory
Council. Aprestigious section service award is
named in his honor. The first lodge flap was issued
in about 1956. Prior to the first lodge flap after
World War II, the lodge issued a round patch and another
arrowhead-shaped patch.
