Manitous Lodge #88, in Section C2-A, was chartered on January 1, 1995. It was formed through the merger of Wolverine Council and Land o' Lakes Council and their respective lodges, Allohak Lodge #88 and Teetonkah Lodge #206. Allohak Lodge #88 had itself been formed from the merger of Tecumseh Lodge #332 and Munhacke Lodge #88. With the origins of the Order of the Arrow honored camping society in the local area beginning around 1936, Manitous Lodge #88 thrives today with a membership of some
800 brothers, serving the Great Sauk Trail Council, headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is especially proud to boast that it was the home lodge of both the 1995 National Chief, Josh Feigelson, and Scouter Dan Ling.
Manitous means the "Mystic Lodge." It is Ojibway in origin. The Manitous are mysteries and spirits - the essence that infuses and safeguards plants and animals, including humans, in all aspects of life. Spiritual tales, tribal teachings, and native legends are interwoven through the time-honored oral tradition of the Ojibway. To learn more about the Manitous, please visit our Manitous Legends page .
The Lodge totem is the medicine wheel. The medicine wheel was used as a form of calendar by the Native Americans, but little else is known about them. The medicine wheel depicted on the lodge flap is one found in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. If you wish to know more about medicine wheels, read the article "Mystery of the Medicine Wheels," in the January 1977 issue of National Geographic.
